I only have one comment to this.
Gareth, if they are fans they wouldnt put you down like this.
If they were honest fans, then they would support you no matter who you are. You have to remember that, yes, you are human. And that you stand by who YOU are, should make all of your fans proud!
Just keep going!
Yours truely. An Admirer

Well, actually the news is not correctly reported.
After his coming out, Gareth Thomas moved from Rugby Union to Rugby League (which is another sport, with different rules). During one game in Northern England with his new team, Gareth became object of homophobic comments by SOME members of the crowd, supporters of the opponent team.
Gareth only said that he was hurt by such comments, but it is not true that ALL the crowd and ALL the supporters of Rugby league are homophobic.
Actually rugby in all his variants (union, league, australian football, rugby 7, beach rugby) is one of the most accepting sport, because of his low profile and attention to differences (on the pitch and outside).

“It’s been life-changing in every sense,” Gareth Thomas said. “I realised when I came out that the spotlight would be on me and also in moving to rugby league, but it’s shown the sporting world that union players can cross to league and that there are no hang-ups about sexuality in union and league, for which I take my hat off to everyone in both codes.”
There was the difficulty of homophobic insults from a minority of the crowd at Castleford, for which the club apologised. Otherwise, Thomas has encountered only warmth and generosity from league’s northern public, which he equates to the “down-to-earth, passion and spirit” of the Welsh rugby community, which before union went professional in 1995 was used to players taking the money trail northwards. |
